European Union: Google Ordered To Remove Personal Online Data If Asked
The European Court of Justice dealt a defeat to Google and a victory for privacy advocates when it ruled that people in the EU have the right to have data about them deleted from online databases. A Spanish man brought the case, arguing that Google impinged on his privacy. Google called the decision "disappointing." EU officials say it's a victory for the protection of Europeans' personal data. Money quote: interference with personal rights "cannot... be justified by merely the economic interest which the operator of the engine has in the data processing."

Content Marketing Works Says New Survey
It's time to get that company blog into shape and working for you! Almost half (46%) of U.S. consumers say they read the blogs of their favorite brands, according to a new survey from WP Engine. Half believe it's important for those brands to produce content, and 40% say it's a negative for them not to. Another finding: 52% prefer going directly to a company's website for brand content, compared with 25% who prefer to get it from social media, and 22% from third-party articles.

The 4 Weirdest Things about LinkedIn
LinkedIn, the premier business-oriented social media network, now has more than 300 million users worldwide. In his blog on likeable.com, Charlie Balk tells how some people find LinkedIn confusing and strange. Nevertheless, he writes, "by avoiding LinkedIn, you're missing out on an opportunity." Here are four things he says people tell him that make them think LinkedIn is a little "weird":

  1. You get notifications about everything. (Actually you can fix this in settings, but by default you get the full fire hose. His tip: Go into "Privacy and Settings" and click "Communications" to change this.)
  2. Everybody has an agenda. Well, business is business. We're here to make money, not to look at pet and baby pictures - but lots of people on LinkedIn are still there looking for jobs.
  3. You can get endorsed for just about anything. Balk jokes, "Is it bad that most of my endorsements are from my mom?"
  4. You know when people are checking you out. Fun - and it can be useful to know who's looking at your profile.

Women Still "Pinning" Away in their 4th Year on Pinterest
Men's participation in Pinterest drops off sharply in their second year of membership (only 55% percent stay on), but 84% of women continue to pin in their fourth year of membership. According to Christopher Ratcliff, blogging on Econsultancy, "In terms of user retention, this is an incredible figure. Especially compared to the competition." (e.g., Twitter and Facebook). In addition, women create more pins as they mature as Pinterest users (152 pins in their fourth year, compared with 42 in the first). Today, 80% of Pinterest users are women, and they create 92% of all pins. Good to know for businesses who want to reach affluent women: Pinterest users in the U.S. spend more than users of Facebook and Twitter.

New Facebook Tool Can Help Marketers Learn about their Audiences
Facebook knows a lot about its members. Now marketers can get information about the people who are important to them from Facebook Audience Insights. The data includes demographics, location and language, purchase activity, and Facebook usage, including Page Likes. Data for three different groups of people can be viewed: all of Facebook, people connected to your Page or event, and Custom Audiences (like your current customers).

Free Image Sources for Social Media and Blogs
This list of more than 50 sources for free images includes some well-known sources such as Wikimedia Commons (the Wikipedia collection of more than 20 million media files); iStock, which releases new free stock photos every week; and Getty Images, which recently began to allow non-commercial sites to embed some of its holdings without charge (commercial sites still need to pay, and downloads are expressly forbidden). Blogger Courtney Seiter, writing on Buffer, also explains the etiquette and legalities of using images from online sources. You can't ever have enough free images, and there's a lot to explore in the list.
