Why Commercial Cleaning Will Always Be an Essential Business

Why Commercial Cleaning Will Always Be an Essential Business

The past year taught us a lot about the value of being “essential.” While much of the country and the world closed offices and shifted to working from home during the pandemic, essential workers – including commercial cleaners – still were going to work every day, because they were needed on the front lines.

It’s increasingly apparent that commercial cleaners always will be essential.

With a renewed scrutiny on workplace cleanliness and safety, watercooler conversations are now peppered with words like “disinfection” and “sanitized.” And although in the past, many offices requested that their cleaners come after the workday ended, now they’re asking them to arrive earlier and be more visible, as their presence provides peace of mind to both employees and customers visiting a place of business.

The future for essential businesses

Essential businesses and workers truly went “above and beyond” during the pandemic. The CDC defines essential workers as those who are essential to maintain critical infrastructure and continue critical services and functions. Commercial cleaning companies were designated essential because they provide support services to commercial facilities, healthcare facilities, government buildings, and more.

The CDC noted that essential workers in healthcare and other industries critical to the infrastructure continued to perform duties on site and deal with the public.

Not surprisingly, those same essential service industries are expected to grow and lead the nation’s recovery. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that essential businesses have been more likely to increase hiring, hours, and pay over the past year. Among essential businesses, 6.9% hired more employees, 5.6% increased hours, and 6.5% increased salaries.

Service franchises to lead recovery

In summer 2020, Franchise Business Review released its first “100 Best Recession-Proof Businesses To Start in 2021” list of franchises expected to perform well as the economy rebounded after the pandemic. Most were from the service sector, representing verticals such as commercial cleaning, automotive repair, business services and staffing, child services and education, financial services, food, and home repair and maintenance. The list, released this spring, was full of essential businesses from those same service industries.

An article from Bloomberg in April reported that in March this year, U.S. service industries expanded at the fastest pace on record.

Covid-19 has actually provided new opportunities for growth in industries such as commercial cleaning. Because of the pandemic, OSHA issued new sanitation guidelines for businesses, and those guidelines are expected to remain in place going forward. As the economy continues to open up and more businesses resume full operations, it will create a new market for deep cleaning and sanitation services.

Franchises in service industries such as commercial cleaning traditionally have performed well during an economic downturn. The commercial cleaning industry not only has the opportunity to help communities recover safely, but also to grow their businesses in a sustainable way.
