Dogtopia Founder & Executives Attain Certified Franchise Executive Designation

Leading Dog Daycare Franchise Ramps Up for Rapid Growth Across North America

February 28, 2013 // Franchising.com // TYSONS CORNER, Va. – Dogtopia, a leading national dog daycare and spa franchise, announced today that its entire executive team received their Certified Franchise Executive (CFE) designation last week by the Institute of Certified Franchise Executives. Amy Nichols, chief executive officer, Mike Schlegel, vice president of development, and Jakob Hunt, vice president of operations, completed a comprehensive course of study in franchise management which includes not only formal education but also experience and participation in franchising to ensure that graduates have a demonstrated ability in practical application of the degree. The institute is the academic branch of the International Franchise Association’s (IFA) Educational Foundation. Dogtopia’s executives were honored at the IFA’s 2013 annual conference in Las Vegas.

“Mike, Jakob and I are honored to be named Certified Franchise Executives,” said Amy Nichols, chief executive officer of Dogtopia. “Dogtopia's team has always strived to maintain a keen understanding of the animal industry and franchising as a business model. Now that our company is in a time of rapid growth it is even more vital to differentiate our brand through continued learning and excellence in franchising.”

Dogtopia is poised for significant growth over the next seven years, with an aggressive strategy to expand the brand to more than 400 locations across the U.S. and Canada. In preparation for this development, Dogtopia’s key executives enrolled in the rigorous course of study, which includes attending institute-sponsored educational seminars and workshops.

Since Dogtopia launched in 2002, it has grown to 22 franchise and four company-owned locations nationwide, as well as six locations currently in development. Dogtopia’s design mirrors that of a chic, upscale spa. Laid out in a similar manner as a children’s daycare facility, Dogtopia has multiple playrooms to suit every dog’s personality and size. In addition to daycare and boarding, Dogtopia also offers a spa, self-service dog wash, and a boutique to pamper dogs of all shapes and sizes.

To fuel growth, Dogtopia is now seeking Regional Developers to expand the brand in major metropolitan areas, including Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Southern California, Houston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Dallas, and South Florida. Additionally, British Columbia and Alberta are key target markets in Canada. Candidates should have an affinity for dogs and the skills to grow a successful business within a proven franchise model. Regional developers will be required to open at least one store within the first year of signing then develop additional stores during a scheduled development period, either by opening and operating more units themselves or by recruiting franchisees for their region.
