Using Business Ownership to Mentor Youth

Kathy Hamill will bring volunteer experience with young adults to new Red Mango location in L.A.

July 26, 2013 // Franchising.com // DALLAS – Red Mango, one of the fastest-growing frozen yogurt and smoothie chains in America, is expanding its presence in sunny Los Angeles, Calif., and will open its newest location at 1011 S. Figueora Street, Los Angeles, CA 90015 in late September. Located in the well-visited L.A. Live entertainment complex across from the Staples Center, Kathy Hamill, the franchise owner, believes this Red Mango will make a big impact with the locals and visitors in Los Angeles.

“The all-natural ingredients for our frozen yogurt, smoothies and parfaits are a perfect compliment to the increasing focus on maintaining good health in Los Angeles,” says Hamill. “I believe that Red Mango products will really resonate with the growing number of health conscious folks in the L.A. market. Our location in L.A. Live will make it a lot easier for those who are craving the healthy, satisfying taste of frozen yogurt and smoothie treats.”

Hamill believes the new site will be a great fit not only for the youth that she hires, but also for the Los Angeles community as a whole. She was attracted to owning and operating a Red Mango to bring her extensive work and volunteer experience with young adults to her new franchise and to mentor college and high-school aged youth in a business setting.

She developed a passion for working with young adults during her eight years of working as the Director of Volunteers for Mothers Against Drunk Driving, MADD, and during her 20 years of working on and off for Becker CPA. During her time at MADD, Hamill collaborated with high school students and young adults to plan programs and events. While at Becker, she worked with students straight out of college, setting them up for success by preparing them for the CPA exam.

“I just really love working with that age group,” says Hamill. “I’m excited to bring high-school and college kids into the store and not only give them a place for employment, but also teach them the ins and outs of running a business.” Hamill’s family has extensive experience in franchising. She has seen first hand the positive impact that workplace mentoring can have, and she is excited to bring that to the new L.A. Live location.

Red Mango offers delicious all-natural flavors of frozen yogurt, smoothies and parfaits. Customers can garnish their yogurt with healthy, natural toppings including fresh fruit, nuts and granola as well as fun toppings like tasty cheesecake bits and yummy yogurt chips.
