BrightStar Care to Give Nurses Week a New Twist with Home Care Nurse of the Year Initiative

Public Education Campaign & Surprise Events Put the Spotlight on Nation’s Home Care Nurses

CHICAGO - April 07, 2015 - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Nurses are typically associated with women in white uniforms, tending to patients in hospitals or doctor’s offices. Yet every day, a growing number of dedicated nurses care for aging adults and people with complex medical needs inside their homes, administering daily medications, providing relief from the symptoms and stress of a serious illness, and managing personalized plans of care.

“Nurses overall have continuously topped the charts as the most trusted professionals in the workforce,” said Sharon Roth Maguire, MS, RN, GNP-BC, and Chief Clinical Quality Officer of BrightStar Care, noting that a 2014 Gallup poll found that Americans ranked nurses as the highest under honesty and ethical standards amongst 11 other professions. “Our home care nurses make an impact on the lives of people every day by delivering a Higher Standard of Care in their homes.”

To pay tribute to the specialized and tireless work of the thousands of nurses throughout its network, BrightStar Care, the nation’s premier private duty in-home care and medical staffing franchise, is launching a widespread campaign to educate the public about the vital role that home care nurses play in today’s health care system. The campaign includes educational materials about the home care nurse profession, Q&As with BrightStar Care Directors of Nursing and an informational video.

In addition, BrightStar Care, with more than 275 locations that can provide medical and non-medical services to clients of all ages within their homes, will launch its first-ever “Home Care Nurse of the Year” awards. Franchise owners will nominate nurses that act as a leader in their local BrightStar Care agency, follow the brand’s values and consistently demonstrate and exemplify the BrightStar Care “Higher Standard of Care”

The awards will conclude with surprise ‘reveal’ ceremonies for four winners in their local communities during National Nurses Week (May 6-12). Currently, BrightStar Care franchises employ more than 5,000 nurses, including Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Licensed Vocational Nurses. During the local surprise events, each award winner will be honored by their BrightStar Care team and presented with a $1,500 scholarship for Continuing Education, as well as a gift certificate to a local spa for a day of well-deserved pampering.

“The nominations are pouring in from our franchisees all over the country with compelling stories of BrightStar Care nurses who go above and beyond to deliver the highest quality of care to their clients in the home,” said CEO and co-founder Shelly Sun. “Through the public education efforts and awards, our goal is to ensure that home care nurses get their turn in the spotlight during National Nurse’s Week.”

BrightStar Care offers both medical and non-medical home care services, as well as medical staffing. They differentiate themselves in the in-home care segment as the only national homecare franchise to require their locations to pursue and obtain accreditation by The Joint Commission, a nationally recognized healthcare quality standards organization. After demonstrating compliance with the Joint Commission’s national standards for healthcare quality and safety, each agency earns The Gold Seal of Approval™, a symbol of quality that reflects the franchise’s commitment to meeting superior clinical and operational standards.

Every BrightStar Care location across the country employs a Registered Nurse (RN) Director of Nursing that creates a unique, person-centered plan of care for each client, conducts regular supervisory visits to ensure caregivers are providing the right care and ensures the agency upholds the clinical quality standards of The Joint Commission.

For the past six years, BrightStar Care franchisees have been asked to nominate one of their employees for a Caregiver of the Year award that honors those who deliver companion care and/or personal care to clients in their home. However, this is the first time the in-home care franchise will implement a separate award that specifically recognizes skilled medical professionals on their staff, such as RNs, LPNs and LVNs.
