Right at Home UK Partners with Leading UK Businesses to Combat Global Caregiver Shortage

Award-Winning In-Home Care Franchise is Taking Innovative Measures to Support Caregivers and Improve Caregiving

UNITED KINGDOM (PRWEB) December 16, 2015 - For the third year, Right at Home UK has received the Five Star Franchise Award for Outstanding Support to Franchisees and, most recently, the in-home senior care provider was ranked second of the country’s three leading franchises in the 2015 Smith + Henderson Best Franchise Awards. On the heels of these honors, Right at Home UK, alongside Right at Home International and Right at Home Ireland, has partnered with four leading national UK businesses to collaborate on global programs and initiatives that would seek to both address the global caregiver shortage and to provide improved career support for current and future professional caregivers.

Within the past two decades, the world population has aged at never-before-seen rates. By 2050, estimates show there will be more than two billion people over the age of 60 worldwide. More than one third of Japan’s population is already over the age of 60. By 2050, China will have more people over the age of 60 than the entire total population of the United States. In Germany, Europe’s most aged population, €45 billion was spent on long-term care alone in 2014.

These figures become even more staggering when you learn that in these countries, and in nearly every other country in the world, the current financial resources allocated to long-term care fail to meet the demand, as does the number of professional caregivers needed to support the population over the age of 60. While modern science and technology has allowed our loved ones to live longer, more mobile families, less people of working age and a global shortage of professional caregivers have challenged nations to provide an increase in sufficient, effective and meaningful care for ageing adults.

This deficiency in care not only further strains limited national resources, but also significantly impacts the professional lives, personal wellbeing and emotional health of family caregivers. "We applaud the efforts of Right at Home to work with corporations in the United Kingdom to address the manpower shortage of professional carers and to support family carers in their efforts to provide care to their loved ones," said Rick Greene, executive advisor of the International Alliance of Carer Organizations (IACO). "The manpower shortage was a major issue discussed by the 13 member nations of IACO at its Annual Meeting in September in Gothenburg Sweden."

“Every day we impact the lives of ageing adults and every day we witness how much more support they need in order to remain independent. There are simply not enough professional caregivers to provide the additional care needed by ageing adults already receiving care and to reduce the burden for families providing care to ageing and disabled loved ones,” said Ken Deary, managing director of Right at Home UK. “More than 3.5 million new paid caregivers will be needed to meet demand in the UK over the next decade, and Right at Home and our international partners are actively creating and defining ways to satisfy that demand. We have to find a way to build and retain professional, quality-driven, compassionate caregivers, all over the world, to support our communities in caring for our ageing loved ones. Caregivers are the most important part of our business and the services we provide every day to more than 17,500 people worldwide.”

Deary believes that the future of global caregiving will become much more promising with the recent announcement that Right at Home is partnering with four UK-based companies: Sticky People, Access Group, Affinity Training and Smith + Henderson to help support not only its current caregivers, but also those who might be considering care as a profession. “We have been fortunate, over the last several months, to collaborate and work with first class national partners that share the same commitment to, and passion for, addressing the pending global caregiver shortage that is facing our industry. Being able to get these industry innovators into collaborative working groups has been a fantastic contribution to our global caregiver initiative,” added Deary.

Right at Home continues to collaborate with these four companies on global programs and initiatives to address both the global caregiver shortage and to provide improved career support for current and future employees:

  • Sticky People, a UK-based company that provides recruitment and retention tools for social care employees, operates with a single goal in mind—to support UK social care providers by improving the number and quality of applicants for frontline care jobs.
  • Access Group, who provide and support Access PeoplePlanner, a domiciliary care management solution that benefits clients receiving professional home care services by helping the provider deliver exceptional services and enhance its staff productivity and efficiency. Access Group works with more than 1,000 home care branches to deliver 30 million hours of care per year.
  • Affinity Training delivers training and support for staff and workers in the caregiving industry. The company offers a wide variety of different accredited care courses that have been tailored to provide modern, high-quality training through a combination of various e-learning lessons and face-to-face classroom time.
  • Smith + Henderson specialize in client and employee surveys that provide expert advice and actionable insight, helping companies turn their feedback into positive change.

“An ageing population around the world means that improving care and support for our professional caregivers will be one of our generation’s greatest health and social care challenges in the years to come. Now is the time to take proactive measures, and that is why we have collaborated with these four incredible companies in an effort to build a better, stronger and more dependable system of caregivers,” said Deary. “In the future, we hope we can make it possible for anyone to have access to the care they want, need, and deserve – realizing that hope starts with supporting first class, passionate and invaluable caregivers.”
