Tutor Doctor Creates $1M “Athlete2Entrepreneur” Fund to Help 2016 College Grads Start a Business

Education Franchise Recruits Former Olympic Volleyball Player Lina Taylor to Reach College Athletes

April 18, 2016 // Franchising.com // VAN NUYS, Calif. – Recognizing an untapped, golden opportunity in the college graduating class of 2016, Tutor Doctor, the world’s fastest-growing in-home private tutoring franchise, has set aside $1 million to provide interest-free loans to graduating college athletes – and partnered with a former Olympian to help spread the word.

“As thousands of graduating college athletes anxiously anticipate what will happen after graduation, most don’t realize their competitive nature, team player mindset and ambition make them ideal business owners,” said Tutor Doctor President Frank Milner. “Unfortunately, even those athletes who understand their transferable skills and want to open a business, are hard-pressed to secure a traditional business loan. The Athlete2Entrepreneur program addresses both issues.”

To tackle the task of educating college athletes about how their skills are suited for business ownership, the company enlisted former Olympic Beach Volleyball player and sought-after international speaker Lina Taylor, a renowned and positive influencer for young athletes. Taylor mentors athletes from the United States Olympic Committee’s Athlete Career and Education program who are transitioning from sport to business.

After a fulfilling career at the University of Idaho, where she was a four-time conference champion and Academic All-American, Taylor and her sister, Petia, represented her home country of Bulgaria at the 2000 Sydney, Australia Olympics. The duo established themselves as a top-10 world tandem and also competed in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. Her role with Tutor Doctor is to help educate not only graduating college athletes, but their coaches and other influencers, about the franchise model and why Tutor Doctor in particular would be a fulfilling career choice.

“Most athletes are aware of the blessings they have been given and have a desire to make a positive difference in other people’s lives,” Taylor said. “They’re also very driven and like to be active. Most would not be happy sitting in a cubicle. They have all the skills of a good business owner, but because of a lack of history, they can’t secure a loan. Through Athlete2Entrepreneur, graduating college athletes would receive an interest-free loan, along with one-on-one coaching and mentoring sessions. This is a huge opportunity for them.

Tutor Doctor, with a network of 450 franchise territories employing more than 17,000 tutors in 14 countries, plans to add 100 new locations worldwide in 2016 to meet growing demand for in-home, one-on-one educational tutoring services. The international franchise sees graduating college athletes as ideal franchise partners in the growth plan.

“Landing a job right out of college is extremely difficult, but finding yourself in a gratifying position that you are truly passionate enough is even tougher,” Milner added. “We are excited to be partnering with Lina to provide business opportunities for these young, passionate and driven graduates.”
