Survey Finds Homework Help from Parents Backfires in Majority of Households

Tutor Doctor Research Cites Rising Levels of Family Frustration & Stress Tied to Schoolwork

July 12, 2016 // Franchising.com // VAN NUYS, CA – Well-intended parents attempting to help their children through challenging homework may be doing more harm than good, according to a new survey of 1,758 homes across four countries.

An increasing number of parents have found the more they assist their children with homework related issues, the more it strains the relationship with their child. In fact, 95 percent of households who participated in the survey reported that having a parent or family member assist with homework increases, rather than decreases, the student’s stress levels.

The research was commissioned by worldwide private tutoring franchise Tutor Doctor, North America’s leading on-to-one in-home private tutoring franchise. The survey polled 1,758 homes in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Australia inquiring about experiences in helping their children with school and homework-related problems.

In the study, 8 out of 10 parents actually attempted to help their children with homework and the number of parents who reported their children as “easily frustrated” was nearly 75 percent. As a result, nearly 93 percent of families reported that homework has had some impact on the overall stress levels of their home. Regarding specific subject areas children find most challenging, more than half of the respondents reported math as the most difficult subject area for their children.

“When parents attempt to help their children with difficult homework, they have all the right intentions,” said Frank Milner, President of Tutor Doctor. “They just want their child to succeed in school. The problem is that it usually backfires. The parent is tired from a long day at work. Their patience runs thin. Both the parent and the child get frustrated. That’s when we get the call.”

Milner added that the vast majority of parents who contact Tutor Doctor cite frequent family blowouts over homework as their reason for needing a professional tutor. “We tell them that’s common and normal. Children respond positively to an outside tutor, especially one that’s been carefully matched to their individual personality and needs.”
