Office Pride Team Integrates Community Service Into Their Workday

April 29, 2019 // Franchising.com // John Grey Giffin, a young area manager for the Office Pride franchise in Frederick, Md., wants to do good while he’s doing his work.

When he was first hired, Giffin said he wanted to accomplish some type of community outreach during his workday. Specifically, he wanted to raise awareness and collect donations for a community food bank.

His boss was thrilled. “We hear so much about what value millennials bring to the workforce,” says Gary Chandler, who owns Office Pride of Frederick-Gaithersburg. “I was impressed that when I asked him about job objectives, he mentioned helping others.”

Office Pride Commercial Cleaning Services is a national cleaning company that encourages its 137 franchises to give back to their local communities. From involvement in local ministries to donations to food banks to support for domestic violence survivors, Office Pride helps people in need in cities across the nation.

“We are very proud of our franchises and the employees who give back through their churches and charities in their communities,” said Todd Hopkins, founder and CEO of Office Pride. “It is beneficial for our neighbors to see our company supporting local organizations. It fosters good feelings among our clients, it inspires our employees to give back and most importantly, it is simply the right thing to do. Companywide, we are committed to community service.”

Every year, community food banks around the nation report heightened awareness and a surge in donations during the holidays. But by February, the donations and awareness campaigns have dropped off, while the need remains steady. However, most people do not hear about that unless they happen to be active in a church or ministry that supports a local food bank.

Giffin was determined to change that. He and Chandler approached eight of the company’s larger clients and asked if they could put collection bins and small signs in the workplaces explaining the need at food banks. When Giffin visited the clients’ offices to check in with Office Pride’s cleaning crews, he would empty the bins, document the donations and take them back to the office. After two weeks, he packed the company van full of donations and delivered them to a local food bank.

“Initially, I thought if we were able to help just one person it would be worth it,” Giffin said. “By the end, we were able to help dozens of families in our community.”

He sent thank-you notes documenting the donations to all of the participating companies so that they could know how much of an impact their employees had made in the community.

Giffin said he and the entire team at Office Pride were gratified to be part of something greater than themselves. “I felt like there was more purpose in the day-to-day work life when we work toward something together beyond our normal lives,” he said. “We could not have had the impact that we did without the support of Office Pride and our clients who partnered with us to create such an incredible experience.”

Next, the Office Pride of Frederick-Gaithersburg team would like to help a local program that provides children with lunches during the summer months while school is out.

Chandler said he was immensely proud of Giffin and the success of the food drive. “A project like this is a huge blessing for the agency we are helping, and it’s also a morale-booster for our employees and for our clients,” he said. “It’s important for our clients and our team members to see that we are proud to serve our community. It’s also good for our customers when their own employees feel good about their company’s generosity.”
