Metal My Way Contest to Begin on September 1

Metal Supermarkets to Sponsor Contest Featuring Creative Metal Projects

August 27, 2020 // Franchising.com // Mississauga, ON, Canada - Metal Supermarkets, the world’s largest supplier of small-quantity metals, today announced the start of the eighth “Metal My Way” contest which showcases and rewards creative and innovative metal projects built across the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Starting Tuesday, September 1, contestants are encouraged to submit a photo or video of their metal creations for a chance to win one of several valuable prizes. Projects, along with some details about the creation, can be submitted using the online submission form on Metal My Way website. No purchase is necessary to enter the contest.

The contest is open to all residents, 18 years or older, in the United States, Canada (excluding Quebec), and the United Kingdom. Contestants may submit multiple metal projects into the competition but are eligible to win only one prize. A complete set of rules for the contest can be found on the Metal My Way website.

“The Metal My Way contest was a fantastic experience and very simple to enter,” said Ryan McQueen, who won the January Metal My Way contest earlier this year with a jet powered supercar submission. “It was fun looking at more than 700 other entries for the contest on the website this year. I appreciate the work I spent building the supercar being recognized and I would encourage anyone else who has a creative metal project to enter the contest in September.”

The contest features five categories grouped in the following projects:

  • Car Builds and Restorations - Metal projects that include car builds, restorations and modifications, as well as car engine work. The 2019 winner in this category was a Hondamatic 750 motorcycle submitted by Michael Deeter of Las Vegas, NV.
  • Vehicle Projects - This category includes other types of vehicle projects, excluding car restorations/modifications. Examples include trailer and camper builds, plane builds or restorations, boat builds or restorations, motorcycles, motorized scooters, bike and buggy builds. Harry Heil of Salt Lake, Utah built a live steam locomotive and backyard railroad as the winning submission in this category last year.
  • Furniture or Home Projects - Submissions including any outdoor and indoor furniture, home renovations, fire pits, barbeques and smokers. The 2019 winner in this category was an automated Toilet seat lift created by John Jackson from Barrie, Ontario.
  • Industrial or Shop Projects - This category includes shop equipment and tool builds, larger scale construction projects or specific aspects of those projects, equipment and tool repair or modification. Robert Webb of Anchorage, Alaska submitted the winning entry for this category in 2019 with a kinetic wood splitter.
  • Artistic and Design Projects - Metal projects that include jewelry, statues, sculptures, knives, and other projects that have aesthetic designs that do not fall into any of the other four categories. The 2019 winner in this category was life-sized bison head wall mount created by Jesse Purdom of Everett, Washington.

Two grand prizes will be awarded, with one for the best overall project and the other for the project with the best use of processing and fabrication methods. The two grand prize winner will each receive a Milwaukee - Compact Electromagnetic Drill Press - 450 RPM - 4270-20, valued at over $1,600.

There will also be one winner for each of the five categories. Category winners will receive a Lincoln Electric 180 Amp Weld-Pack 180 HD MIG Wire Feed Welder, valued at over $600 each.

The best overall projects will be graded based on complexity, scale, creativity, craftsmanship and quantity of metal used. The best processing/fabrication winner will be judged on its complexity, intricacy, creativity, uniqueness, and level of skill required.

The month-long Metal My Way contest will run through September 30 and winners will be announced approximately one week later.

“I can’t wait to see what new projects that metal craftspeople have created this year that will be entered in the Metal My Way contest,” said Stephen Schober, President and CEO of Metal Supermarkets, the title sponsor of the contest. “The Metal My Way contest is a highlight for our entire store network and all of us at Metal Supermarkets and our fellow sponsors are keen to see the entries arrive. With the pandemic forcing many people to spend more time at home these past months, many people have devoted additional time to their metal hobby projects. We have been extremely impressed with entries we have received in the past and look forward to them showcasing their innovative and creative metal projects.”

In addition to Metal Supermarkets, the Metal My Way contest is sponsored by HACO, an industry leader in sheet metal working machines, Swift-Cut, a UK manufacturer of high quality, smart cutting solutions at affordable prices, and Cosen Saws, one of the world’s leading bandsaw manufacturers.
