Punxsutawney Phil Sees Shadow, Predicts Six More Weeks of Winter

Groundhog Day Signals the Continuation of a Harsh Winter Season for Home & Property Owners

February 03, 2022 // Franchising.com // TAMARAC, Fla. - PuroClean, a leading restoration and remediation franchise headquartered in Tamarac, with over 375 locations nationwide offers timely winter weather tips for home & business owners in honor of yesterday morning’s announcement. The prediction was made Wednesday morning 7:25 a.m. EST when officials took Punxsutawney Phil out of the shadows to look to the future. In response to the severe winter weather now impacting large parts of North America, and with additional winter weather events expected in the coming month, PuroClean technicians are on notice, ready to jump into action 24/7 to service home and property owners in need.

“Our goal as a national, leading restoration and remediation franchise is to educate and serve our neighbors on the precautions they can take to help alleviate the strain on their homes and businesses with the utmost dignity and respect,” said Steve White, President and COO of PuroClean. “With winter weather conditions on the rise across the nation, our teams are highly trained and available 24/7 to return those affected to normalcy as quickly as possible.”

The below home tips from the trusted restoration brand can help mitigate the effects of severe winter weather – from impending storms to typical dropping temperatures, and the issues those can cause anytime, all season long:

  • Drain your sprinkler system: Irrigation pipes are prone to freezing in cold temperatures, so be sure to drain the system to prevent rupture of pipes. Similarly, make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions and keep your swimming pool drained during the extended winter season. If you are leaving your home for an extended period of time, turn off your water supply and leave your taps open – this will prevent pipes from bursting.
  • Remove the snow from your roof: To prevent structural damage to your roof, remove snow when it reaches a depth of 6 inches. Remember that snow and ice are heavy and can often place excess pressure on the roof structure. Make sure to dispose of snow away from walkways, building exits, and drain downspouts.
  • Prevent your pipes from freezing: Allow a faucet in your home to drip slightly. Moving water (even a drip) will help prevent pipes from freezing. Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage. Additionally, open kitchen and bathroom cabinets to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing.
  • Prepare in advance for a power outage: Keep a car charger for your cellphone in your vehicle. Stock up on essential food items ahead of time, and limit opening of refrigerator/freezer to prevent the food from spoiling. Never run a generator inside a home or a garage! Carbon monoxide poisoning is lethal.
  • Inspect your heating system and heating appliances: Have AC units serviced to ensure all heaters are functioning properly throughout the home. Make sure to also test space heaters and limit their use for extended periods of time. Never leave a space heater unattended.
  • Clean gutters and downspouts: Make sure gutters are free of any blockage that can obstruct the drainage of water accumulating from melted snow and/or rain. In addition to checking gutters, make sure the downspouts drain away from the foundation of your home.
  • Maintain a winter weather checklist: Ultimately, the best way property owners can protect their home or business is to proactively maintain upkeep throughout the winter season (and beyond). By creating a maintenance checklist, property owners can find peace-of-mind, knowing the steps have been taken to combat the uncertainty that comes with inclement weather.
