Executive Care Franchisees Expand Proven Business Model to Meet Soaring Demand

Executive Care franchisee Mujahid Shakur had no industry experience when he signed on with the leading home healthcare franchise in 2017. Still, the career-long entrepreneur was well-versed on how to spot a business opportunity.

As the previous owner of multiple barbershops, Shakur often heard clients relay stories of the overwhelming demands of caring for a loved one or finding the right in-home health care fit. He had also witnessed similar struggles within his own family.

For Shakur, who oversees daily operations, franchise ownership is a family affair.

Shakur’s wife, Angela; his brother, recently retired pro basketball player Mustafa Shakur; and sister-in-law, Joslyn co-own the business, which serves the Pennsylvania counties of Montgomery, Bucks, and Philadelphia.

When the brothers and their wives looked to team up on an investment, home care franchising was an attractive route, and Executive Care stood out. They fell in love with the brand’s proven business model and hand's on nature of its founders.

Executive Care did not start as a franchise organization. Founders Mila and Lenny Verkhoglaz ran the company for nine years before launching franchising in 2013. They wanted to make sure that the Executive Care business model had a systematic way of unlocking long-term value for franchisees while delivering the needed services to clients and family members.

Today, the pair remain actively involved in their original Hackensack, New Jersey-based home care office, providing franchisees with a competitive edge from the start.

“Just because you have a franchise, it doesn't necessarily mean you are going to have the kind of assistance and help you need as a franchisee,” says Shakur. “The opportunity to spend time with the owners or the CEO of a company rarely happens. So, I like the fact that I can communicate with Mila and Lenny whenever I need to – that is something that stood out to us.”

Executive Care is more than a senior care company. The top-ranked brand uniquely delivers a wide range of specialized care for seniors, the disabled, and recovering individuals of all ages—all while ensuring the patient remains in the comfort of his or her own home—no matter how “home” is defined. Services range from companionship and personal care to skilled care and increasingly facility staffing. Executive Care also serves individuals recovering from illness, injury, or surgery.

With 10,000 people estimated to turn 65 each day, Executive Care stands ready to meet the rising demand for the brand’s premium services. The highly ranked, award-winning franchise continues to expand its national footprint with 22 locations in 12 states, and several locations in development in Florida, Arizona, and Pennsylvania.

Franchise owners can expect industry-leading territories and a business model based on seven potential revenue streams. For franchisees like the Shakurs, honored with an Operational Excellence Award by their franchisor in 2019, the brand is a true difference maker. Executive Care improves and enhances access to coordinated care in every local community it serves.

“There is obviously a chance with a business like this to build something big on the financial side, but you are doing good at the same time,” Shakur says.
