Perkins Launches Compelling National Franchise Strategy for Growth

Beloved family brand Perkins Restaurant & Bakery® is positioned for a new era of growth bolstered by strong leadership and a perfected recipe for sustained success in the $285 billion breakfast segment.

Perkins Restaurant & Bakery®, long known as the ideal community mealtime gathering spot, has launched a national franchise initiative to significantly expand its presence in strategically targeted markets across the U.S.

For proven multi-unit operators seeking to diversify with a leading full-service restaurant and bakery brand, there’s never been a better time to be a Perkins franchise partner, says Michael Abt, chief executive officer of Ascent Hospitality Management, parent to the Perkins brand, acquired in 2019.

“We have worked to optimize the concept’s growth potential for franchisees,” says Abt, whose family dining portfolio also includes Huddle House. “We’ve streamlined store-level execution, ramped up marketing and menu development, and gained significant cost efficiencies, so the model is primed and ready for accelerated expansion. We look forward to aligning with strong restaurant operators who want to join us during this new chapter for Perkins.”

Founded in 1958 as a single pancake house, Perkins has nearly 290 locations open or under development across 32 states and Canada, serving up a full menu of homestyle comfort breakfast and lunch and dinner classics, fresh-from-the-oven pies, and Mammoth Muffins® any time of the day.

Perkins expects growth to come from both new and existing franchisees, drawn to the brand’s multiple high-performing dayparts, strong off-premise sales, including third-party delivery and catering, and access to the $11 billion bakery segment.

The brand’s strong development pipeline includes the recent reopening of a restaurant in Edinboro, Pennsylvania, a location forced to close in 2015 after a building fire. The new restaurant is owned and operated by JDK Management, Perkins largest multi-unit franchisee with more than 30 years of industry experience.

“The JDK Management team’s strong work ethic and established reputation for helping to grow the brand throughout the years makes them the perfect group to welcome Perkins back to Edinboro,” says industry veteran Peter Ortiz, the newly-named chief development officer of Atlanta-based Ascent tapped to lead franchise growth for both Perkins and Huddle House chains.

Ortiz’s strong track record includes franchise development efforts for such brands as Potbelly, Moe’s Southwest Grill, Qdoba Mexican Eats, Potbelly Sandwich Shop, and Schlotzsky’s. Throughout his career, Ortiz has netted sales of nearly 2,000 franchises in the U.S. and internationally.

Franchisees can take advantage of various flexible formats, including free-standing, end-caps, inline, travel centers and hotels, and retrofits—all optimized for off-premise dining and patio seating.

To  evolve the look of its franchise offering, Perkins brought in design firm Louis + Partners, a company that’s worked to modernize the likes of Hilton, IHOP, and Chili’s. As part of the process, Perkins shrunk its prototype to 4,100 square feet and constructed it in a way that leverages the growing takeout and delivery business. Renderings of the upcoming design showcase pickup lockers inside the store and a mobile order window on the outside, making off-premise dining seamless.

Perkins is looking forward to partnering with like-minded restaurant owners committed to giving back to the communities and families they serve.
