Carlson Hotels Worldwide Adds 33 New Properties in the Second Quarter of 2009

July 27, 2009 // Franchising.com // MINNEAPOLIS -- Carlson Hotels Worldwide today announced that it has added 33 new hotels and resorts to its worldwide portfolio of brands in the second quarter of 2009. The new properties span 13 countries, including 13 Radisson and Radisson Blu properties; 15 Country Inns & Suites By CarlsonSM properties; and five Park Inn® locations.

The company also announced that it signed franchise or management agreements for 20 new hotels during the same period, adding future locations in the United States, Brazil, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Poland, Morocco, Mozambique, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and India. At the end of the second quarter, the Carlson Hotels Worldwide portfolio totaled 1,032 hotels with more than 153,500 rooms in 73 countries. Carlson hotel brands also include Regent® Hotels & Resorts and Park Plaza® Hotels & Resorts.

Radisson Hotels & Resorts

Radisson® Hotels & Resorts opened 13 properties in the second quarter of 2009 and signed six new hotels in six countries including Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Russia, Brazil and the United States.

In Asia Pacific, the 270-room Radisson Plaza Hotel Tianjin opened in April, becoming the newest Radisson Plaza to join the Carlson Hotels Worldwide portfolio in the second quarter. Situated on Xinkai Road, to the West of Tianjin Railway Station and East of Tianjin Airport, the 23-story high-rise hotel is located in the new financial hub of Hedong District, close to Tianjin's Central Business District. The hotel features three different restaurant concepts including Café@66, an all day dining restaurant with the workings of a contemporary European Brassiere; Kushi, styled after a Japanese Robatayaki; and China Station, with striking interior designs and a contemporary menu concentrating on Northern Chinese cuisine.

Among the new deal signings is the Radisson Hotel Maceio, Brazil, scheduled to open later this year and featuring 195 rooms including 18 suites. The hotel, situated on Pajuçara Beach and close to the famous natural swimming pools, will offer a convention center that can accommodate up to 640 people, a restaurant with beach views and a bistro.

The Rezidor Hotel Group, Carlson's primary partner in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, recently celebrated the opening of the Radisson Blu Hotel, Dakar, its seventh Radisson Blu hotel in Africa and first in Senegal. Located on the country's Atlantic coast on the western edge of the continent, the hotel features 180 guest rooms including six suites. Offering a refreshing blend of contemporary style and classic African elegance, all rooms and suites are equipped with deluxe furnishings and free high-speed Internet access. The new hotel is part of an exclusive complex of designer retail stores, upscale apartments plus a state-of-the-art spa and wellness facility.

Currently under extensive renovation, the new Radisson Royal Hotel, Moscow featuring 507 guest rooms and 38 serviced apartments, is scheduled to open its doors in December 2009. The property forms part of the legendary "Seven Sisters" – the Soviet skyscrapers based on an idea of Stalin and built in Soviet neo-classicism architectural style between 1949 and 1957. The Radisson Royal Hotel, Moscow is located right in the city center – on a bow of the Moskva River at the conjunction of Kutuzovsky Prospect and Novy Arbat, two of the city's most prestigious commercial thoroughfares. For meetings and events, the hotel will offer a contemporary conference center for up to 1,000 guests; comprising nine meeting rooms, a ballroom of almost 4,850 square feet, a business center, and a library.

In addition, The Rezidor Hotel Group opened its first Hotel Missoni in Edinburgh, Scotland, developed in collaboration with the renowned Italian luxury fashion dynasty Missoni. The partnership creates a distinctive blend of fashion, function, form and service that adds up to a new genre of genuinely luxurious hotels. The brand also signed new properties in Cape Town, South Africa and Ilha de Cajaiba, Brazil, and will open its second hotel in Kuwait City later this year.

Park Plaza Hotels & Resorts

Park Plaza Hotels & Resorts signed two new properties including its first properties in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet Autonomous Region, People's Republic of China and Faridabad, India. The 87-room Park Plaza Lhasa City Center will be located along one of Lhasa's main streets in the newly developed city center. When the hotel opens in 2010, guests will have easy access to all parts of the city, including the Qinghai-Tibet Railway and the Lhasa Gonggar Airport, which offers flights to major cities in China as well as an international connection to Kathmandu, Nepal. The Park Plaza Faridabad, India is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2010 and will feature 80 rooms. Faridabad is known as the Industrial Capital of the state of Haryana and is its most populated city.

Park Plaza Hotels in Europe also signed a new hotel in Amsterdam under their art'otel by Park Plaza brand. Scheduled to open in 2011, the art'otel amsterdam, by Park Plaza will offer guests approximately 100 rooms, an art café, and a ground-floor and basement public space dedicated to showcasing cultural and social activities. The hotel will be located in the heart of Amsterdam, directly opposite the city's main railway station.

Country Inns & Suites By Carlson

Country Inns & Suites By Carlson opened 15 new properties in the second quarter of 2009 with 12 locations in the United States and three in India. The brand also signed five new hotels in the second quarter including locations in Augusta, Ga., Seguin, Texas and three properties across India.

Opening in June, the Country Inn & Suites By Carlson Gillette is the brand's first hotel in the state of Wyoming. The hotel offers 80 guestrooms including standard rooms, studio suites, one bedroom suites, and Jacuzzi suites. The 100 percent non-smoking hotel features an indoor whirlpool and 11,000 square foot indoor water park with two slides, a lazy river, toddler play pool, basketball pool and Jacuzzi. All rooms feature complimentary wireless high-speed Internet access, hair dryer, 32-inch LCD television, microwave and refrigerator.

Other new Country Inns & Suites By Carlson openings in the first quarter of 2009 include the Country Inn & Suites By Carlson Richmond West @I-64, Va.; Country Inn & Suites By Carlson Knoxville at Cedar Bluff, Tenn.; Country Inn & Suites By Carlson Dothan, Ala.; Country Inn & Suites By Carlson Daphne, Ala.; Country Inn & Suites By Carlson Carlisle, Pa.; Country Inn & Suites By Carlson Fredericksburg, Va.; Country Inn & Suites By Carlson Macon North, Ga.; Country Inn & Suites By Carlson Norfolk Airport South, Va.; Country Inn & Suites By Carlson Bradenton @I-75, Fla.; Country Inn & Suites By Carlson Tifton, Ga.; Country Inn & Suites By Carlson Barstow, Calif.; Country Inn & Suites By Carlson Ahmedabad in Gujarat, India; Country Inn & Suites By Carlson Sahibabad in Ghaziabad, India; and Country Inn By Carlson Amritsar Queens Road in Punjab, India.

The Country Inn & Suites By Carlson Mysore, India, scheduled to open in 2011, will provide 120 well-appointed rooms and offer convenient access to festivities that take place during the period of Dasara, the state festival of Karnataka. The hotel will feature a number of amenities including a health club, specialty restaurant and bar, and extensive banquet facilities.

Park Inn

Park Inn opened five new properties in the second quarter of 2009 adding locations in Poland, Austria and the United Kingdom. The brand also signed six new hotels in the same time frame with locations in Belgium, Poland, United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Mozambique, and Tunisia.

Opening in early April, the Park Inn Krakow is the first Park Inn property in Poland. Featuring 152 rooms, the Park Inn Krakow is located in the heart of Krakow's city center and is within walking distance of several top attractions including the historic castle Wawel and the Jewish district of Kazimierz. Notable hotel amenities include a fitness room and sauna, the RBG Bar and Grill Restaurant, and five modern and flexible meeting rooms.

Additional Park Inn openings in the second quarter include the Park Inn Brighton, United Kingdom; Park Inn Doncaster, United Kingdom; Park Inn Manchester, Victoria, United Kingdom; and Park Inn Linz, Austria.

The Park Inn Tete will be the brand's first hotel in Mozambique when it opens in the fourth quarter of 2010. The hotel will feature 116 rooms and offer an all day restaurant, a lobby bar, a gym, and an outdoor swimming pool and terrace. Located on the banks of the Zambezi River in Northwest Mozambique, Tete is one of Africa's most important mining areas as well as a regional trading hub.
