Summer Safety with Family and Fireworks

Rainbow International shares tips for enjoying the holiday.

WACO,Texas (PRWEB) July 03, 2013 - During the summer months, as the heat turns up and environmental conditions become drier, it is crucial to be aware of the risks that accompany fireworks and take the necessary safety precautions to ensure the safety of all involved.

Know the current weather conditions. Before using fireworks, it is important to be aware of the weather conditions, as there could be a current burn-ban in the local area. A burn-ban is an indication that the environmental area conditions are dry and unsafe for firework use due to higher than average fire risk. Take note of excessive windiness, as the wind can facilitate and fuel fires.

Only use fireworks from a licensed dealer. Each year, injuries related directly to firework use are reported. It is important to make sure that the fireworks being used came from a licensed dealer and have a warning label. Homemade “fireworks” are not regulated and may result in serious injury.

Keep children out of harm’s way. Make sure children understand that fireworks are not toys, and they can be harmful when handled improperly. Teach children a safe distance for spectating fireworks, and keep a close eye on them.

Have a plan in place for emergencies. When using fireworks, it is important to have a water source available nearby, such as a water hose, as rogue fires can spread quickly. Ensure that there is an exit strategy in place for your family and friends in case of a fire, and practice as necessary. It is also important to have a first aid kit and a phone handy at the location of the festivities.

Use fireworks as instructed. Fireworks have many variations and effects, and often have different instructions. Be sure to follow the specific instructions for each type of firework. For example, place fireworks on flat, level ground that is free of any debris, which may catch fire, and make sure all fireworks are pointed in a safe direction?away from people, houses and forests.

As we prepare to celebrate the Fourth of July with fireworks, food and fun, take some extra time and plan for safety to prevent any unwelcome surprises. Share these safety precautions with family and friends, and enjoy the fourth!
