Joey Chestnut Claims Victory as Hooters World Wing-Eating Champion

Back-to-back wing-eating titleholder challenges Americans to eat one million wings on National Chicken Wing Day with all-you-can-eat deal at Hooters

CLEARWATER, Fla. - July 26. 2013 - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Professional eating phenom Joey “Jaws” Chestnut devoured 179 of Hooters world famous wings in 10 minutes last night to take home the title of 2013 Hooters World Wing-Eating Champion for the second year in a row. The action took place at the Original Hooters of Clearwater, Fla., where 16 competitive eater finalists battled to the bone. To maintain the wing-eating momentum, Hooters now turns the challenge to the good people of America to collectively consume one million chicken wings on Monday, July 29 in celebration of National Chicken Wing Day.

On Monday, every Hooters location across the country will offer a $12.99 all-you-can-eat wing deal to rally wing-eating enthusiasts around a common one million wing goal. Hooters issued a National Chicken Wing Day public service announcement to those who feel it has been too long since they devoured a plate of delicious chicken wings.

“Hooters is a renowned chicken wing establishment and the ultimate destination for watching sports of all kinds. The sport of competitive wing eating unites two of our greatest passions in the second annual Hooters World Wing-Eating Championship,” said Dave Henninger, chief marketing officer, Hooters of America. “Now it is time to test the wing-eating skills of Americans everywhere. I task the country with building on the impressive performance of Joey Chestnut to collectively take down one million chicken wings on National Chicken Wing Day.”

Chestnut, from San Jose, Calif., beat 15 other competitors from around the world to claim his back-to-back Hooters World Wing-Eating Champion title. Rounding out the top five, rookie contender Miki Sudo of Las Vegas placed second, eating 155 wings. Adrian “The Rabbit” Morgan of Baton Rouge, La., placed third, taking down 149 wings. Michelle Lesco of Tuscon, Ariz., placed fourth, eating 131 wings, and Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas of Alexandria, Va., placed fifth with 128 wings.

Hooters commissioned Major League Eating (MLE) to officially sanction the Hooters World Wing-Eating Championship tour. It kicked off in Panama City, Fla., on March 30 followed by a national circuit of wing-eating qualifier events throughout the U.S., including Augusta, Ga., during the Masters Golf Tournament and at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas during the Hooters International Swimsuit Pageant. Hooters concluded its tour with the grand finale event on July 25 where it all began at the original Hooters location in Clearwater.
