Le Meridien to Debut in Cleveland as Part of Downtown Revitalization

Slated to Open in January 2016, Le Méridien Cleveland will Transform Two Historic Buildings on Euclid Avenue, Formerly Known as "Millionaire’s Row"

NEW YORK - October 17, 2013 - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE: HOT) today announced that its Le Méridien brand is picking up even more momentum in North America with a new hotel planned for Cleveland, Ohio. Le Méridien Cleveland will open in January 2016 following the completion of a highly anticipated, adaptive re-use project that will join together and transform two adjacent, historic buildings on Euclid Avenue. Owned by JHB Hotel, LLC, Le Méridien Cleveland will be the brand’s third historic adaptive re-use project in North America, following Le Méridien Philadelphia and Le Méridien Tampa, showcasing a timeless chic design ethos that juxtaposes traditional architecture with contemporary style.

"Le Méridien Cleveland will build upon the brand’s success with historic, adaptive re-use projects and provide travellers with an enticing new option in the heart of Cleveland’s thriving theatre district," said Allison Reid, Senior Vice President of North America Development, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. "We are thrilled to work with JHB Hotel, LLC to introduce this contemporary lifestyle brand to Cleveland as part of the city’s on-going downtown rejuvenation."

Formerly known as "Millionaire’s Row," Euclid Avenue was home to the city’s most affluent citizens and a must-see destination for European travellers in the early 1900s when Cleveland was a major manufacturing hub. The new Le Méridien Cleveland will be developed at 1001-1101 Euclid Avenue as part of a visionary project that will connect and transform two adjacent buildings – the John Hartness Brown Building (JHB Building), originally constructed in 1901 as a multi-story office building with retail space, and 1101 Euclid Avenue, built in 1915 as an office building. The development will also include 10,500 square feet of ground-floor retail space and a 125-space parking garage.

Situated in the heart of the city’s bustling theatre district, Le Méridien Cleveland will be adjacent to Playhouse Square, the second largest theatre complex in the United States, and walking distance to the newly developed Horseshoe Casino and Cleveland Convention Center. Nearby attractions include the city’s vibrant East 4th Street entertainment district, Progressive Field and Cleveland Browns Stadium. Guests will enjoy easy access to the rest of the city via the HealthLine Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system and Cleveland’s RTA Free E-Line Trolley.

"We’re thrilled to debut Le Méridien in Cleveland as part of the brand’s aggressive expansion in North America," said Brian Povinelli, Global Brand Leader, Le Méridien and Westin Hotels. "Since acquiring the brand in 2005, Starwood has made significant investments in redeveloping Le Méridien, which connects with guests through the art, culture and cuisine in key cities around the world, and we look forward to playing a significant role in the resurgence of Downtown Cleveland."

In addition to 206 modern guest rooms and suites, Le Méridien Cleveland will feature a full-service restaurant, signature bar, 3,000 square-foot lounge, indoor pool, 24-hour fitness center, and more than 12,000 feet of state-of-the-art meeting and event space, perfect for social occasions and business functions.

Le Méridien Cleveland will feature the brand’s signature Le Méridien Hub™ experience, which re-interprets the traditional lobby into a social gathering place for creative people to converse, debate, and exchange. Le Méridien Hub further builds on the brand’s award-winning arrival experience and coffee culture. Le Méridien arrival consists of four elements: large-scale artwork in high impact areas to reset the mind and stimulate dialogue and curiosity; the sensory experience, illustrated through Le Méridien signature scent, sound and use of light, creating a unique and distinctive atmosphere; UNLOCK ART™ programme, featuring LM100 ™ artist designed key card collections that not only offer access to the guestroom but also to Le Méridien affiliated contemporary cultural centers in the city; and a 24-hour curated soundtrack. The Hub at Le Méridien Cleveland will also feature the signature Master Barista, a recently launched initiative to meet the growing demands of coffee lovers at every Le Méridien hotel worldwide. Master Baristas lead coffee-related initiatives at each hotel, serve as a coffee cultural ambassador, and maintain knowledge of current coffee trends within the destination.

"We are thrilled to team up with Starwood to bring Le Méridien to Cleveland," said Stephen Goodman, Western National Capital Partners, LLC. "Without the support of the City of Cleveland, the Downtown Cleveland Alliance, Heritage Ohio and the Historic Gateway Neighborhood Corporation, this project would not have been possible, and I sincerely thank each of them for their efforts."

About Le Méridien Hotels & Resorts

Le Méridien, the Paris-born hotel brand currently represented by nearly 100 properties in more than 40 countries, was acquired by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. (NYS: HOT) in November 2005. Since then, Le Méridien has gone through a brand re-launch, which included a large scale hotels product consolidation as well as redefining its brand strategy. Through creation of the LM100 artist community, Le Méridien has transformed numerous guest touch points, thus bringing unique, interactive and curated experiences to its guests. Plans call for dynamic expansion of Le Méridien Hotels and Resorts within the next five years, concentrating on markets in Asia-Pacific and the Americas. Le Méridien recently opened new hotels in Bali, Atlanta, Dallas, Istanbul, Oran (Algeria), Arlington (Virginia, USA), and Coimbatore (India), and will open in the next 12 months in Chicago, Zhengzhou (China), Mahabaleshwar (India), Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam), Cairo (Egypt), Qingdao (China), Dhaka (Bangladesh), Tampa (Florida, USA) and Columbus (Ohio, USA).
