Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month

October 04, 2023 // Franchising.com // Dripping Springs and McAllen, TX - As National Hispanic Heritage Month unfolds, two stories of passion for birding and commitment to community emerge from the heart of Texas. Wild Birds Unlimited proudly welcomes new franchisees who are helping grow the brand while embracing their Hispanic heritage.

In the picturesque setting of Texas Hill Country, Amanda and Hector Bustillos are proudly taking on the family-owned Wild Birds Unlimited franchise in Dripping Springs, Texas. Established six years ago by Amanda's parents, Anna and Manuel Pena, the store has flourished due to its close-knit community vibes and avian expertise.

"Transitioning into ownership feels natural,” said Amanda. “It’s been an amazing journey to have a family business in the town where I grew up. We've built bonds with our patrons and look forward to honoring our family's legacy, all while adding our unique touch.”

This ownership changeover underscores the couple's pride in their roots, and their commitment to celebrating cultural diversity within the Dripping Springs community. The younger generation's enthusiasm in leading this legacy franchise demonstrates their dedication to maintaining their familial bonds and traditions while growing the business.

"We're incredibly lucky to have the chance to pursue our passion in the very community we cherish and call home," said Hector. "Growing up, nature and wildlife played a significant role in my life. Owning this shop feels like a full-circle moment for me, returning to my roots. Nature defines us, and we aim to offer everyone, particularly the Latino community, a chance to connect with it as deeply as we have."

Meanwhile, south of the Dripping Springs store, Erica Barrera, a lifelong resident of McAllen, Texas, and her husband, Jesse, are bringing Wild Birds Unlimited to South Texas. Raised on a South Texas cattle ranch, Erica has always held a profound appreciation for nature. Having graduated with a BA in biology from the University of Texas, Erica later pursued a career in nursing. Yet, after 14 years as a family nurse practitioner, her love for nature called her to a new path.

"Being in one of the most bio-diverse areas in the U.S., we saw an opportunity to intertwine our love for nature with a beloved franchise. We are eager to contribute to the mission of saving the songbirds and serving our community," Erica said.

The alignment of these exciting transitions with National Hispanic Heritage Month highlights the significance of cultural diversity and the role Hispanic entrepreneurs play in enhancing the Texan business landscape. Both Wild Birds Unlimited locations promise a rich blend of birding products and knowledge, deeply rooted in tradition and a shared love for the natural world.
